Here's something worth checking out, you can search for books and compare prices at isbn.nu, which checks a bunch of online booksellers' websites to find the range of (lowest) prices the book is on offer for.

You might find that the lowest price is for a badly handled second-hand copy of the book, but at least you won't be kicking yourself for paying several dollars more than necessary when you do make a purchase.
