Beautiful Sydney

The view from Sydney's Circular Quay

  1. Interesting photographs. I don't suppose you take any interest in the ships of Sydney (or elsewhere in Australia)? Personally, I'm particularly interested in warships, but any chat you may have about your country's marine would be interesting!

  2. Unfortunately I lost my interest in naval vessels in my teens ... I still love seeing them in the harbour (and got a short inspection of a Canadian destroyer once from some sailors I befriended), but I don't go out of my way to check them out.

I do love Napoleonic war fiction (Hornblower et al) but find myself less interested in the reality of the ship designs of the era.

I should point out that this is despite being a reasonable sailor myself ...

  3. Oho, a sailor yourself, eh? Perhaps you will entertain us with some stories of the high seas....

  4. Well, I did the Sydney to Hobart race when I was 16, and pretty much got turned off yacht racing by the experience.

The bit that got to me the most was the yearlong preparation beforehand. Being the son of the boat owner meant that I was there first and last every time we practiced ... and devoting half of every weekend to the sport was not my idea of fun.

Still, it was a great experience, and I'm sure I'l do more sailing again (I did a few seasons casual racing in my twenties).
